Do I need SmartMEDIA if I don't deliver channels, I only want to provide VoD?
If you are only providing VoD services, you will only need SmartMEDIA when using specific VoD stream delivery protocols:

HTTP-based protocols (
HLS,DASH): You will not need SmartMEDIA or other media servers for stream delivery. A single server for content preparation is sufficient. After preparation, content can be published on standard HTTP servers for subscriber access. -
RTSP protocol support: You will need SmartMEDIA or other media servers for stream delivery. This scenario applies when supporting legacy set-top boxes (STBs) that do not support
HLSorDASHprotocols. A separate license is required.
For legacy STB deployments, consider upgrading to devices that support HLS or DASH protocols to eliminate the need for streaming servers.
